FUTEBOL composes a federation of research infrastructure, develops a supporting control framework, and conducts experimentation-based research in order to advance the state of telecommunications through the investigation of the optical/wireless boundary of networks. In this capacity, the methodology of the FUTEBOL project is organized into three distinct steps:

  1.  Compose federated research infrastructure suited for integrated optical/wireless experimentation. Within Europe, much of this research infrastructure exists, based on the prior work of FIRE and other national or international projects, and is brought to the consortium by TCD, UNIVBRIS, and VTT. Within Brazil, infrastructure suitable for work at the optical/wireless boundary must be largely developed at UFRGS, UFES, and UFMG, extending the foundation built by the FIBRE project. Further, this research infrastructure will be federated to support experimenters in accessing facilities and provisioning resources. The Fed4FIRE project recognizes the need for such federation mechanisms, but does not provide support for integrated optical/wireless research. Therefore, FUTEBOL will extend the mechanisms initially developed in Fed4FIRE.
  1. Develop a converged control framework to support optical/wireless experimentation on the federated research infrastructure.
    As made clear from the work of past FIRE projects, raw infrastructure does not fulfil the needs of the research community. Rather, a control framework is necessary to allow experimenters to coordinate their experiments. Such a control framework eases the learning curve associated with the use of research infrastructure facilities and, in the case of FUTEBOL, coalesces the distinct domains of optical and wireless networking.
  2. Advance telecommunications directly through research using the developed research infrastructure and control framework. The ultimate goal of FUTEBOL is the advancement of telecommunications through addressing, as yet underdeveloped converged optical/wireless network architectures and methods. To this end, the consortium consists of leading members of the telecommunications community, from both industry and academia. These members will provide the research infrastructure necessary to address integrated optical/wireless advancement, as well as, demonstrate the value of this infrastructure by applying it to develop architectures and methods that address those problems most relevant to end- users.


The figure illustrates the layer natured of FUTEBOL: the end-user driven advancement of telecommunications relies on the development of the FUTEBOL converged control framework, which, in turn, requires the composition of federated research infrastructure. Through this approach, FUTEBOL provides a complete, top-down development of research infrastructure, tailored to the needs of end-users throughout Brazil and Europe. Moreover, the combination of leading academic and industrial partners within the FUTEBOL consortium provides the key ingredients required to connect the broader telecommunications community to the advancements achieved through research.
